How APS calculation works in South Africa
APS stands for Admission Point Score. Universities use it as one part of deciding whether you can be considered for a programme. For the common method, your six recognised subjects are converted to achievement levels and added together. A mark of 80% or more earns 7 points, 70–79% earns 6, down to 1 point below 30%.

Quick answers
APS calculator questions
How is a standard APS score calculated?
Convert each of six recognised 20-credit subject percentages to an NSC achievement level from 1 to 7, then add the six points. Life Orientation is normally excluded. The maximum is 42.
Does Life Orientation count towards APS?
It is excluded by universities such as UP, UJ, NWU and UCT. Wits is an important exception: it includes Life Orientation using a reduced points scale.
Is every university APS calculated the same way?
No. Wits uses its own points table and UCT largely works with six subject percentages. Faculties may also require specific subjects, minimum marks, NBT results or additional selection tests.
Does meeting the minimum APS guarantee admission?
No. It makes you eligible to be considered. Admission can still depend on subject minimums, available places, selection procedures and your final results.
